Annual Christmas
Fatstock Show & Sale

Monday 7th December 2009

This year we enjoyed one of the best turnouts of quality cattle seen at York and it was the more remarkable because all the cattle came from regular producers at the market.  Dealing with the cattle section, these were judged by David Wilson & Andy Hewitt who run the family butchers shop at Huntington near York.  David is a regular buyer at the market, taking cattle, sheep and pigs for his customers; and his pork pies are legendary.  A full list of prize winners is set out below but special mention needs to be made of some of the achievements on the day.

The Reg Stephenson Young Bull Trophy was eventually won by Keith Bowes of Bilborough who was delighted, having already won most of the other prizes at our Fatstock Show over the years.  His Blonde X bull made 210p/k (£1089) and was bought by Alec Traves of Escrick.  The Reserve Champion bull was a heavyweight shown by Bill Cowling & family of Pannal near Harrogate and it went on to make 180p/k before being bought by J Penny & Sons of Leeds.

In the competition leading up to the supreme accolade, David had chosen as best steer a heavyweight from G H West & Son and a reserve steer from Les Thompson.  His best heifer was a superb lightweight black Limousin shown by Pam Gibson and the reserve was the heavyweight heifer proudly bred and shown by Gavin Boocock.  All these went into the ring for the Supreme Championship and the accolade fell on Pam Gibson’s lightweight heifer.

The Lord Mayor and the Civic Parties from both York and Ryedale joined us in the sale ring when the Supreme Champion made £3/k (£1,560) and was bought by the Judge, David Wilson.

The Reserve Champion taking the York Auction Centre Silver Salver and the Ron Holgate Trophy went on to make 230p/k (£1,386) and was bought by J Penny & Sons of Leeds.

In the sheep section the York Auction Centre cup was awarded to H & C Taylor of Brandsburton near Driffield with a pen of Texel X weighing 41.2k and realising £95 a piece to M & C Meats, Crossgates near Leeds.  The Reserve Championship went to S Beachell & Sons of Beswick near Huddersfield with 39.6k lambs selling for £90 to Kurpas Meats Plc of Manchester.

Sincere thanks to all those who took the trouble to compete and were well hollyrewarded for their efforts.
